The FA Cup winners Arsenal sent a message out to last years champions as they brushed aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community shield. Arsenal took the lead after some nifty footwork from Santi Cazorla as he created a yard to unleash a shot past City’s new goalkeeper Willy Caballero. The Londoners then hit City on the counter attack as Aaron Ramsey recieved a pass in the box that allowed him to get a shot away and double Arsenal’s lead
With limited opportunites in the first half, City came close as a cross into the box saw Stevan Jovetic header hit the post and then the follow up shot saved.
But the nail in the coffin was a spectacular goal from man of the match Olivier Giroud who held of City new boy Zuculini before firing a dipping 25-yard strike.
It was the first time Arsene Wenger’s side had won the English season’s curtain raiser since 2004, and it will surely give them plenty of belief before they start their Premier league campaign against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Gunners fielded three of their four summer signings as forward Alexis Sanchez, right-back Mathieu Debuchy and defender Calum Chambers started, City were missing eight key players and, while manager Manuel Pellegrini may play down the defeat, it will serve as a wake up call before they begin the defence of their title away at Newcastle on Sunday.
